Blue Cross And Blue Shield Association - BCBS will not cover anesthesia for endoscopy procedure.
I have a pre-cancerous condition called Barrett's esophagus and I have to have an endoscopy every two years. This involves an out patient procedure to place instruments down the throat all the way to the small intestine to take photos and biopsies.
BCBS says that it is not medically necessary to have anesthesia for this. I think if you did this to a dog there would be a public outcry.
I have to pay $600 out of pocket each time I have this done and it does not apply to deductible. My company Spectrum Brands says that it carefully chose this company as our provider and it completely supports any decision it makes.
Reason of review: Bad quality.
Monetary Loss: $600.
Preferred solution: Let my licensed doctor who is approved by BCBS to make my health care decisions without interference by BCBS. Support the doctors you OK!.
Location: Christiansburg, Virginia

Direct Care providers are the way to go! Cut out insurance companies completely! http://accesshealthcaredirect.com/direct-care-practices/
Was shock to me too, that BC gets to determine my treatment. My Doctor doesn't do an EGD without anesthesia. Doesn't the doc know best?
Unfortunately, my provider does not cover said anesthesia either. It would be inhumane to endure an endoscopy or colonoscopy...or both without the benefit of anesthesia.
Insurance companies know this. They know you will not elect to have those procedures without it. Therefore, the patient/consumer is held hostage. I would love to see people save their insurance premiums and apply them to a direct care provider.
Then if you must have a procedure, use your savings to cover it. Direct care should be the way of the future!

Your company carefully chooses a provider that will dump costs on employees, thus saving the provider, and your company, money. Welcome to the 21st century.
